About the Future of the APE Conference 21st July 2020

Dear Participant,

as announced at the end of APE 2020 in January, the years-long organiser Arnoud de Kemp had found a solution for the future of the APE Conference and that he would enter into a co-operation with the Walter de Gruyter Foundation, the family charity set up by the heirs of the publisher Walter de Gruyter in Berlin. I am Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Walter de Gruyter was my great-grandfather.

Somewhat delayed by the Corona lockdown, today I can announce that the Foundation has registered the ‘Berlin Institute for Scholarly Publishing (BISP)’ as a non-for-profit entity to take over the formal organization (back office) of future APE conferences, starting with APE 2021 on 11‑13 January 2021.
The Walter de Gruyter Foundation is independent and in no way controlled by the publishing house. Up to now, the Foundation primarily has made modest donations to a wide variety of academic projects.

Arnoud de Kemp: ‘After 15 years of intensive work as a soloist and with several financial bottlenecks, I am delighted that the future of the APE conference is secured. With BISP, APE will continue to provide a lasting, sustainable benefit for the wider academic publishing community.’

Arnoud de Kemp will continue to be the Convener of the conference and act as independent Chairman of the Program Committee for the next three years. The Program Committee will include representatives of publishers, funders and academic institutions, and will be limited to 14 members.

With the continuous support of sponsors the APE Conference has survived and, in recent years, broke even with a small surplus. Sponsors have committed speakers and sent their best staff, which partly explains the average high quality of the audience.

Surpluses arising from future APE Conferences will be used to develop a Curriculum to provide career development seminars for Early-Career Publishers and Early-Career Researchers within the ‚Berlin Institute for Scholarly Publishing (BISP)‘. BISP which will collaborate with other organizations to encourage and develop best-practice within the wider scholarly ecosystem.

I hope that you will continue to support APE and look forward to seeing you In January 2021 at APE 2021.

With best wishes

Christoph Seils
